About FSSAI
The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) is the statutory authority set up under the Food Safety and Standards Act, 2006. It sets science-based standards for food and regulates its manufacture, storage, distribution, sale and import. FSSAI works under the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, and the FSS Act applies to all food business operators (FBOs) in India.
Food businesses apply for FSSAI registration or licences online on the FoSCoS portal (foscos.fssai.gov.in). The licence or registration carries a 14-digit number that must appear on food labels.
Which one do you need?
- Basic Registration: annual turnover up to ₹12 lakh (Form A on FoSCoS).
- State Licence: annual turnover above ₹12 lakh and up to ₹20 crore, subject to the capacity limits for your food category.

Frequently asked questions
Do I need a Central Licence to export food?
Yes. FSSAI’s FoSCoS eligibility list places manufacturer-exporters and trader/merchant exporters under the Central Licence, with no turnover threshold.
How long is an FSSAI licence valid?
Licences and registrations are issued for 1 to 5 years, as chosen when you apply, and must be renewed before expiry. If you stop the food business, the licence should be surrendered on FoSCoS rather than left to expire. We send renewal reminders to clients well in advance.
Can I apply myself?
Yes, on foscos.fssai.gov.in. We assist if you want help choosing the right kind of business, documents and follow-up.
